From Residency to Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Yetman’s exceptional journey with UTHealth Houston began in the mid-1980s. After earning his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport, he moved to Houston to complete his pediatric residency at McGovern Medical School (then known as The University of Texas Medical School at Houston).
Recognizing his rare combination of diagnostic brilliance and leadership capability, the university invited him to join the faculty immediately upon his graduation in 1987. He went on to serve as the Director of the Division of Community and General Pediatrics for nearly three decades (1997–2024) and as the medical director of the UT Physicians Pediatric Primary Care Clinic. In 2024, his decades of institutional impact culminated in his appointment as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
A Prolific Scholar and Champion for the Next Generation
Dr. Yetman’s influence extended far beyond the exam room. He was a premier voice in pediatric literature, publishing over 100 peer-reviewed articles, textbooks, and book chapters.

A Legacy of Value, Warmth, and Complete Devotion
Despite his extensive executive and academic obligations, Dr. Yetman never lost touch with the heart of medicine: the children. He operated under a strict clinical philosophy, believing that every child, regardless of socio-economic background, deserved the highest quality of medical care and the maximum possible value. He was an active, driving member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association.
When away from the hospital corridors and the demands of clinical operations, Bob found peace in the quiet rhythms of life, possessing a great love for exploring the world through travel and tending to his beloved home garden.
Dr. Robert J. Yetman leaves behind an unparalleled legacy. He is survived by his family, his countless patients who grew into adulthood under his care, and the generations of pediatricians he personally trained to carry the torch of medicine forward. Memorial service arrangements and an institutional tribute fund are being organized by UTHealth Houston and Children’s Memorial Hermann leadership, with details to be distributed as they are finalized.
